Ponsford Ltd is very proud that we have Master
Gilder, Wayne Reynolds, heading up our Gilding Department, with over
twenty-three years of experience in the field.
We offer complete conservation services for gilding decorative art
objects; including sculptures, furniture, frames, and mirrors. We
are
also able to provide interior and exterior gilding of historic
and public buildings as well as private residences.
Our design services include the construction of original frames for
paintings, museum-quality reproductions for paintings of any period,
and the fabrication of contemporary mirror frames. Consulting services
are available for collection surveys, condition reports, and lectures.

US Capitol, Washington DC
Conservation treatment of two frames for The Senate Collection: “Discovery
of the Hudson,” by Albert Bierstadt; “The First Reading
of
the Emancipation Proclamation,” by Francis B. Carpenter. The
20’ X 30’ walnut and gold leaf frame for “The Battle
of Lake Erie” by John Henry Powell
US Department of the State, Washington
DC
Conservation of eighteenth and nineteenth-century American looking
glasses and gold leaf picture frames for the diplomatic rooms on the
eighth floor.
National Gallery of Art, Washington,
DC
Complete conservation treatment of the frame of the portrait, “Italian
Noble Woman,” by Anthony Van Dyck. Conservation treatment of
frames for the exhibition, “Treasure House of Britain,”
on loan from the National Trust, London, England. For the exhibition,
“Leonardo to Titian,” conservation treatment of frames on
loan from the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.
The White House: Complete restoration of the original gold
leaf frame for the Thomas Sully’s portrait of Andrew Jackson
that hangs in the
Oval Office, on loan from the NGA.
Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, TX
Reproduction of hand-carved Arts and Crafts frames based on archival
photographs of paintings with the original frames selected by the
artists Charles Russell and Frederic Remington.
Blair House, Washington, DC
Guest Quarters for Visiting Heads of State: Complete conservation
treatment of eighteenth and nineteenth-century carved and gilded furniture,
as well as mirror, picture and portrait frames.

Fabrication of two heroic-size reproduction gold leaf frames for the
Benjamin West paintings, “Death on the Pale Horse,” and
“ Christ Reject,” measuring 15 x 25 and 17 x 22 feet.

for the Fine Arts
Conservation of nineteenth-century gold leaf frames for the following
paintings: “Ariadne of Naxos” by John Vanderlyn; “Goerge
Washington, The Landsdowne Portrait,” by Gilbert Stuart; and
“The Turkish Page”
by Frank Duveneck.

The Andrew Johnson Suite: Gilding and installation of two pier mirrors
and six walnut and ebonized curtain cornices with tieback shields.
Architectural gilding of the pilasters and ceiling ornament.
U.S. Capitol, Washington, DC
Senate Russell Building: Historic restoration of the Senate Caucus
room ceiling and of the Grand Staircase ceiling. Applied 23,500 sheets
of twenty-three karat gold leaf to the plaster architectural ornament.
Government House, Annapolis, MD
Residence of the Governor of Maryland: Gilding of the nineteenth-century
plaster ceiling ornament in the Victorian period room.
NationsBank, Baltimore, MD
Ten Light Street; Formerly the Maryland National Bank Building: Historic
restoration of the mansard roof of Nations Bank’s historic Aztec
revival building, ca, 1929. Involved removal of the 1970’s-era
“MN” signage and superstructure, replication of the original
cooper shingles, and the gilding over sixty-four hundred square feet
of lead-coated copper pilasters of
the wheat sheaf and rosette-ornamented
crown.
