Before laser cleaning

After laser cleaning

The Ablation Process:

The removal of soiling using the laser system is self-limiting. This is where removal of material /corrosion from the surface of the sculpture stops once the soiling has been lifted/removed. This occurs because many pollutants/corrosion strongly absorb laser energy at the wavelength being used.

Therefore, the laser beam is able to discriminate effectively between soiled and cleaned surfaces. We are able to identify and remove specifically and only materials harmful or foreign to the sculpture.

The laser cleaning process is effective and selective, leaving the original patination, removing dirt, corrosion and debris without any loss of substrate material.
